Before we brought our new German Shorthaired Pointer puppy home from the breeder, I made it imperative that my children and husband had equal input on what we’d name the newest member of our family.
We decided we wanted a name that was a Proper Name, wasn’t too cutesy, and had only one or two syllables, making it easy for the pup to understand and grasp our commands when called.
I handed them each a printout of the top 100 girl names from the annual American Kennel Club rankings and had them circle their favorites. Then we compared lists and narrowed down to our top joint contenders. I cast my vote for Molly, but was handily outvoted. Piper was my family’s top choice and I now can’t imagine a more suitable moniker for our peppy Little P (pictured above at 10-weeks-old).
There are countless free lists out there that are updated annually and I encourage you to look at as many as possible for inspiration. But it's important not to overlook key factors when naming your pup.
